Summer isn’t endless here, so when the sun is out, we go out. If you’re looking for a spot to cool off, have a picnic, or just take in a quiet sunset, here are some of my favourite beaches in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. I’ve sorted them based on the vibe you’re after.
For a family day out
- Petrie Island (Ottawa – East): Lots of space, shallow waters, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s great for kids and nature lovers. There’s even a turtle conservation area.

- Mooney’s Bay (Ottawa): One of the most popular beaches in the city. You’ll find lifeguards, a big playground, and easy access to snacks and washrooms.

- Parc des Cèdres (Gatineau – Aylmer): A quieter spot with a nice family feel. Big play areas, lots of trees for shade, and a beach that rarely gets too crowded.

For BBQs and group hangouts
- Lac-Leamy Park (Gatineau): You can bring your own BBQ and set up for the day. It’s also close to walking trails and the casino.
- Britannia Beach (Ottawa): Wide open spaces, BBQ areas, and room for frisbee, soccer, or just lounging with friends. Great spot for weekend gatherings.
For beautiful sunsets
- Shirley’s Bay (Ottawa – West): Calm, quiet, and probably one of the most peaceful places to watch the sky change colours.
- Rapides-Farmer Park (Gatineau): A small park with a beautiful view over the river. Perfect for an end-of-day walk or a quiet moment.
- Petrie Island: Yes, again. Go in the late afternoon, stay for sunset — it’s worth it.
And hey — I know there are plenty of other beautiful lakes and beaches a bit further out. But for this list, I wanted to keep it simple: just the spots you can reach without a car.
If you’d like me to put together a little list of getaways just outside the city, let me know in the comments. I’ve got some hidden gems up my sleeve — and I’d love to share them with you.
